Review Of Matthew Through Chapter 4

Matthew 1:1-4:25

  1. Chapter 1

    1. Genealogy from David’s son Solomon down to Joseph to show lineage from King David

      1. List shows all the good and bad in ancestry (Matthew 1:1-17)

        1. Women of Christs genealogy

          1. Tamar had twins Perez and Zerah by Judah by playing a harlot

          2. Ruth followed Naomi back to Bethlehem and married Boaz

          3. Bathsheba slept with David who had her husband Uriah murdered to cover up the affair

      2. 3 sets of 14 generations

        1. 1st14 we see the rise of the kings family ancestors to the king himself David

        2. 2nd14 we David’s kingdom flourish until Nebuchadnezzar takes them away into captivity

        3. 3rd14 we have the royal family declining and dwindling into the family of a poor carpenter

        4. Then when the fullness of time has come the One David looked forward to comes 

      3. We have Joseph betrothed to Mary (Matthew 1:18)

      4. Mary conceives via the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18)

      5. The Lord speaks to Joseph in a dream and he takes Mary as his bride but knew not until after the child is born ( Proof Mary was not a perpetual virgin) (Matthew 1:22-25)


  1. Chapter 2

    1. Wise men visit from the east (Matthew 2::1-12)

    2. Herod inquires as to where to find the child (Matthew 2:3-8)

    3. Flight to Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath (Matthew 2:13-15)

    4. Slaughter of the innocents (Matthew 2:16-18)

    5. Joseph returns after angel tells him in a dream the Herod is dead (Matthew 2:19-21)

    6. Joseph settles down in Nazareth, fulfilling prophecy he shall be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:22-23)


  1. Chapter 3

    1. The Preaching of John the Baptist about the King of Heaven being at hand (Matthew 3:1-2)

    2. Great multitudes from all Judea, and surrounding regions come to him (Matthew 3:5)

      1. They come to hear him preach (Matthew 3:6)

      2. They come to be baptized in the Jordan River by him (Matthew 3:6)

    3. Pharisees and Sadducees come and ask if he is Elijah the prophet (Matthew 3:7-12)

      1. John tells them he is the voice crying in the wilderness Isaiah talked of

      2. Warns them to flee the wrath to come as he call them a “Brood of Vipers”

    4. As John baptizes Jesus, we see a picture of the Holy Trinity (Matthew 3:13-17)

      1. Jesus comes and gets baptized by him (Matthew 3:13-15)

      2. Spirit of God lands on Him like a dove from heaven and anoints Him (Matthew 3:16)

      3. God speaks from Heaven (Matthew 3:17)

“This is My Son in whom I am well pleased”

  1. Chapter 4

    1. After being baptized Jesus is lead to the desert for 40 days until He is tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1-10)

    2. After he is refreshed by Angels He begins His ministry (Matthew 4:11)

    3. He goes throughout Galilee preaching and telling people to (Matthew 4:12-17)

Matthew 4:17
“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand”
  1. He calls forth Peter, Andrew, John, and James to follow Him (Matthew 4:18-22)

  2. Multitudes come to be healed and follow Him as His fame spreads throughout all Syria (Matthew 23-25)

    1. Galilee

    2. Jerusalem

    3. Judea

    4. The Decapolis and beyond


  1. In Chapter 4, verse 12 covers almost a year in the life of Jesus and His ministry This is a summary of that year which Matthew does not cover 

    1. After He was tempted by Satan He just left the desert (Matthew 4:1-11)

    2. He goes to Cana, attends a wedding and turns water to wine for His first miracle (John 2:1-11)

    3. Jesus goes to Capernaum, to prepare His headquarters for His ministry? (John 2:12)

    4. The first cleansing of temple (John 2:13-25)

    5. Nicodemus visits Him at night (John 3:1-21)

      1. Jesus teaches on being born again (John 3:1-14)

      2. God so loved the world (John 3:15-16)

      3. Condemnation without believing (John 3:17-18)

      4. Men loved darkness because (John 3:19-21)

    6. John the Baptist exalts Christ (John 3:22-36)

      1. Jesus came to the countryside of Judea (John 3:22)

      2. John the Baptist testifies about Jesus (John 3:23-28)

      3. Rejoices greatly because of the Bridegroom’s voice (John 3:29)

      4. John humbles himself, ”He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 30-36)

    7. After rebuking Herod for marrying his brother’s wife John is thrown in prison (Luke 3:19-20)

    8. Jesus goes into Galilee by way of Samaria

      1. When He heard of Johns imprisonment (Matthew 4:12)

      2. After John was put in prison He started preaching in Galilee (Mark 1:14)

      3. When He heard Pharisees knew he was baptizing more people than John, (John 4:1-2)

    9. Jesus talks to the woman at the well in Samaria and stays two days (John 4:4-23)

    10. Jesus preaches repentance and news starts spreading quickly of Him (Luke 4:14-15 and Matthew 4:12)

    11. Nobleman’s son healed (John 4:43-54)

      1. The healing of an official of Herod’s court is 2ndmiracle in Cana, 1stwas wedding (John 2:1-11)

      2. The father went his way, which showed the sincerity of his faith. Being satisfied, he did not hurry home that night, but returned as one easy in his own mind.

      3. All the people in his household became believers

    12. Jesus invited to read at the synagogue in His hometown Nazareth (Luke 4:16-22)

      1. Jesus read from the book of Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1-2)

      2. They thought He spoke very well and enjoyed the gracious words coming from His lips 

    13. Rejected by His hometown they would attempt to kill Him, but Jesus escapes (Luke 4:23-30)

      1. He knew they would not accept Him, so He tells them what they are thinking

        1. Later on the cross they would taunt Him with similar words (Matthew 27:42)a. 

      2. They had heard of his fame in Capernaum, but they knew him as a poor young man, and his family was poor. "If he has such power as fame reports, let him better his own condition.” He then replied to the proverb that they were murmuring amongst themselves with another.

No prophet is acceptable in his own country.”

  1. He was correct of course, for they did not believe He was who He said he was

  2. Instead of being thrown off a cliff, He passed through them and headed to Capernaum

  3. It was not yet His time to suffer for our sins, this is the first of many such incidents
